Asymmetric threats worldwide have demonstrated the need for more sophisticated port and harbor security systems. Attacks can be delivered through a variety of means and in addition to the cost in human life, could cause catastrophic damage to infrastructure and the economy. Security officials are continuing to look for technologies that will help them discriminate normal activities from potential threats.
Ports and harbors worldwide are relying on SSR’s technologies to enhance their readiness and response capabilities for such threats. SSR provides 360°, 24/7 monitoring of these potential dangers and our automated alerting system will ensures that a facility’s security detail is well equipped to identify and quickly respond to threats.
Key Technologies and Solutions
360° Integrated Sensor Surveillance
In addition to radar, SSR is able to integrate camera systems, AIS, LRAD, and sonar to provide complete, 360° surveillance of surface and subsurface targets. The SSR Composite Tracker can correlate the target information from multiple sensors to provide an integrated track picture, while alarm zones based on proximity and other characteristics can detect and trigger events like sluing cameras or LRADs and even to send out alerts.
Small Vessel Security
In ports and harbors it is not enough to detect small vessels; the challenge is discriminating threats from pleasure boaters. SSR provides means to vet small targets and automatically identify friendly vessels. Working with our port partners, SSR is continuing to evolve its technologies in this area to stay ahead of the threats.
Inter-agency Information Sharing
Inter-agency operations have continued to evolve and SSR has been adapting to and helping these efforts. SSR can provide other agencies full control or view-only privileges of the SSR system. In addition, track information can be shared with other agencies through a variety of common protocols or through SSR’s COMRIC API.
Persistent Panoramic Cameras
A wide-angle panoramic camera is ideal for port security operations. Using these cameras, SSR combines its radar and track picture to provide a unique display, allowing operators to simultaneously view the camera images and radar data while managing tracks from either display.
Command Center to Ship Track Sharing
Port security personnel can use the track sharing capability to help facilitate interdiction operations by sending real-time track information to the interdicting vessel. In addition, patrol vessels can enhance the system’s track picture by sending its own target information back to the command center.
Enhanced Radar Processing
SSR’s radar processing improves the detection capability of standard maritime radars. Automatic clutter processing allows the operator to perform multiple tasks and not focus on tuning the radar. The clutter processing automatically adjusts as storms and other environmental conditions change and the radar processing enhances the detectability of small targets.
