Military Navigation Radar Systems
SSR’s AN/SPS-78 next-gen surface search radar system modernizes existing military navigation radars such as the AN/SPS-73. Therefore, creating a reliable automated tracking and collision warning system to support radar navigation for ships. Additionally, the SPS-78 maintains backwards compatibility with existing tactical shipboard systems. Our systems can provide turnkey tactical command and control (C2) capabilities for coast guard, paramilitary, and naval ships. Conversely, they can serve as a component within a large-scale ship self-defense system.

Shipboard Surveillance Systems in Action
Modernizing the AN/SPS-73 Military Navigation Radar System
The United States Coast Guard (USCG) chose SSR to provide its next-gen surface search radar system. For the USCG the AN/SPS-73 had reached end-of-life and was becoming difficult to sustain in the fleet. As part of this contract, SSR developed the AN/SPS-78 to replace the aging AN/SPS-73 systems aboard the USCG’s 270-foot, 210-foot medium endurance cutters, and 110-foot patrol craft.
SSR’s solution provided a modern military navigation radar system. It addressed the USCG’s reliability and obsolesce concerns while also enhancing radar processing and tracking performance. In large shipboard architectures, each component interconnects to a variety of other systems. Many of these systems still use a proprietary interface, although the trend is towards modern open architecture standards. SSR’s surface search radar provided interoperability with the existing systems without requiring additional interface development.
The AN/SPS-78 is a modern COTS-based solution that addresses reliability and obsolesce issues of the AN/SPS-73. This high-performance radar processing and tracking system bridge the gap between commercial IMO requirements and tactical mission capabilities required by coast guards and navies. The AN/SPS-78 is fully compatible with the USCG’s SeaWatch and other naval systems.
