See what you’re missing

Our shipboard surveillance systems go beyond commercial radar navigation for ships.  We create unique radar and integrated sensors solutions to enhance target detection and tracking, from military navigation radars to remote and unmanned shipboard surveillance.

Shipboard Surveillance Systems - Surface Search Radar - Military Navigation Radar

Filling the Gap between Navigation and Defense

Today’s interconnected global community depends on the world’s oceans more than ever, bringing maritime activity to an all-time high. The commercial and naval communities alike are looking towards technology to improve navigational efficiencies and safety at sea.

SSR’s shipboard surveillance system extends the capabilities of commercial navigation systems to support, tactical military missions, automated collision avoidance, and remote unmanned shipboard surveillance.

Military Navigation Radar Systems

SSR’s AN/SPS-78 next-gen surface search radar system modernizes existing military navigation radars such as the AN/SPS-73.  Therefore, creating a reliable automated tracking and collision warning system to support radar navigation for ships.  Additionally, the SPS-78 maintains backwards compatibility with existing tactical shipboard systems.  Our systems can provide turnkey tactical command and control (C2) capabilities for coast guard, paramilitary, and naval ships.  Conversely, they can serve as a component within a large-scale ship self-defense system.

Remote and Unmanned Shipboard Surveillance

View your fleet’s surface search radar, track, and camera data from a remote operations center.  Our customers are centralizing surveillance operations and extending coastal surveillance systems with these intelligent onboard systems.  By integrating surface search radars with other surveillance sensors, we are creating high fidelity tracks for unmanned shipboard surveillance and navigation systems.

Strategic Benefits

SSR shipboard surveillance systems provide tactical surface search radar surveillance while increasing navigational safety and mission effectiveness.

Inter-agency Collaboration Icon

Collaborate with Interceptors and Patrol Boats

Increase efficiency through collaboration. Our integrated naval radar system allows operators to manage intercept and boarding operations from the combat information center.  Using encrypted AIS or over-the-horizon data links to transmit messages, images and track information with the forward vessel.

Modernize Naval Radar Systems

We provide government agencies with a practical and low-risk approach to naval radar system modernization.  SSR systems, such as the AN/SPS-78, offer a path to radar modernization without impacting existing C4ISR systems.  SSR ensures backward and forwards compatibility, helping you can sustain existing naval surveillance radars while modernizing other system components.

Leverage Existing Sensors Icon

Integrate Commercial and Existing Technologies

The best of both worlds. Our C2 systems extend beyond basic radar navigation for ships; filling the gap between these and large-scale ship self-defense systems. This approach creates a modern next-gen surface search radar system which is available today using commercial-off-the-shelf technology.

C2 and Tactical Data Link Interoperability

Expand your radar horizon. Our automated radar processing and tracking system will generate local track data without a dedicated operator.  Offering unmanned shipboard surveillance capabilities.  Easily allowing ships to share naval radar system track data using commercial and military data links, such as GCCS and Link.

Optimized Bandwidth Performance Icon

Parallel Mission Processing

Do more.  Our system supports multiple simultaneous missions by independently processing and tracking the same sensor data.  While the bridge focuses on navigation and collision avoidance, the combat information center can manage an interdiction operation miles away.

Shipboard Surveillance Systems in Action

Modernizing the AN/SPS-73 Military Navigation Radar System

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) chose SSR to provide its next-gen surface search radar system.  For the USCG the AN/SPS-73 had reached end-of-life and was becoming difficult to sustain in the fleet.  As part of this contract, SSR developed the AN/SPS-78 to replace the aging AN/SPS-73 systems aboard the USCG’s 270-foot, 210-foot medium endurance cutters, and 110-foot patrol craft.

SSR’s solution provided a modern military navigation radar system.  It addressed the USCG’s reliability and obsolesce concerns while also enhancing radar processing and tracking performance.  In large shipboard architectures, each component interconnects to a variety of other systems.  Many of these systems still use a proprietary interface, although the trend is towards modern open architecture standards.  SSR’s surface search radar provided interoperability with the existing systems without requiring additional interface development.

The AN/SPS-78 is a modern COTS-based solution that addresses reliability and obsolesce issues of the AN/SPS-73.  This high-performance radar processing and tracking system bridge the gap between commercial IMO requirements and tactical mission capabilities required by coast guards and navies.  The AN/SPS-78 is fully compatible with the USCG’s SeaWatch and other naval systems.
